Coming In Out Of The Cold: Ossining Opens Emergency Winter Shelter
OSSINING, N.Y. -- An Ossining coalition will be providing homeless folks with a safe and warm place to stay overnight and a bite to eat this winter. Several local interfaith groups partnered last year on a three-week pilot program. This year, the Emergency Shelter Project will run for 10 weeks, and possible longer, said Karen D’Attore, executive director of the Interfaith Council for Action Housing Network, an Ossining-based nonprofit agency. Like other communities facing challenging times, Ossining is no stranger to homelessness and poverty. The very low apartment vacancy rate has driven …

Youngsters Find Four-Pawed Reading Buddy At Shelton Bookstore
SHELTON, Conn. -- Any adult who has had to speak in public knows how paralyzingly stressful it can be. But imagine how nerve-racking it is for a little kid, who is just learning to read, and has to do it aloud in front of classmates? Now imagine instead an audience of one, a “listener” who is non-judgmental, patient and who will give you his paw. If he has soft fur, a wet nose and a goofy smile -- that would be Ollie, a certified therapy dog. “It’s a lot better to read in front of someone who loves you, unconditionally,” says Dorothy Sim-Broder of Written Words Bookstore in Shelton. Ollie …

No Tax Hike In County Budget Approved By Westchester Legislators
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- One little bit of good news for Westchesterites in 2017: County taxes won’t be going up and its workforce won’t be reduced. The Board of Legislators voted 10-7 Monday to pass a $1.8 billion operating plan. It needed nine votes to pass. It was the seventh budget in a row that didn’t raise taxes, the county said. No county jobs will be cut under the plan. In fact, it actually adds six positions to the Westchester County Police Department and four engineering positions to the Department of Public Works. The coalition of 10 legislators that voted for the budget consisted…

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, N.J. -- Happy Birthday to Hasbrouck Heights’s Frank Sinatra! Ol’ Blue Eyes would have been 101 years old Monday. Peekskill Students, Parents, Others Stand Up For School Funding
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A contingent of Peekskill students, parents and educators have hand-delivered a stack of letters to Sen. Terrence Murphy’s Yorktown office asking the state to cough up millions in school aid. The advocates are demanding that Gov. Andrew Cuomo unfreeze the state’s Foundation Aid and phase in the $11 million that the school district is owed. They are also asking that the formula that determines the amount of aid the district gets be recalculated. The letter-writing campaign was timed, advocates said, to coincide with Cuomo’s drafting of the state’s education budget for the…

Goal! Bergen, Passaic Teams Don Uniforms Created By Pompton Lakes Couple
POMPTON LAKES, N.J. – There probably isn’t a more aptly named sporting goods store than Home Field Advantage in Pompton Lakes. Owner Steve Colombo, who grew up in the Passiac County borough, has many fond childhood memories of going to buy baseball bats, gloves and other sports equipment from a shop run by the Abramowitz family. “They were there forever,” Colombo says, adding that it left a big gap in the community when the store eventually closed. Fast forward to about 14 years ago: Colombo was, he says, “a corporate guy” but the stress of running a major baking company was starting to ge…
