Mary Kathleen Knox, Former South Salem Resident, Dies At 94
LEWISBORO, N.Y. – Mary Kathleen (McDermott) Knox, a former resident of South Salem, died on Wednesday, Dec. 28. She was 94.
Knox, known as Kathie, lived in Tampa, Fla.
A native of Gratiot, Wis., Knox was an avid golfer and had played in clubs throughout Westchester County and had received many awards and accolades.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joe; daughter, Kathleen Knox Dowd; granddaughter, Heather Dowd; and four siblings.
Taconic Parkway Among 'Most Dangerous, Deadly Places In NY,' Website Says
The Taconic State Parkway, the longest in New York, is also among its deadliest places, according to onlyinyourstate.com.
The website, in a post about the most dangerous spots in the Empire State, noted the 104-mile-long highway that runs through four counties -- Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess and Columbia -- has been the scene of 2,080 crashes since 2014.
Commuters (many en route to New York City) tend to put the pedal to the metal, especially in Westchester and Putnam counties, the website said.

Study Reveals Rockland's Top-Paid Elected Officials
ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann gets a bigger paycheck than any other elected official in Rockland County and also makes more than the top-earner in Westchester, according to an analysis by Journal News/lohud.com.
The Journal News/lohud.com study compaired Hoehmann’s $170,309 annual salary to that of Mike Spano’s, who makes $156,100 as mayor of Yonkers, a city that, the media outlet pointed out, has a population more than twice the size of Clarkstown’s.

Meet Cashmere, Pomona Animal Shelter's Pet Of The Week
POMONA, N.Y. – Cashmere, a sweet, playful -- and FIV-positive -- kitty is the “Pet of the Week” at the Hi Tor Animal Care Center in Pomona.
Her owners were unable to keep her due to a “change in lifestyle,” the shelter said.
Although Cashmere has the feline immunodeficiency virus she is always running around playing, they said, adding that cats with FIV “can live long and healthy lives.”
She loves people and attention, the shelter said.

Opera Star Roberta Peters, 86, Of Rye Dies Of Parkinson's Disease
RYE, N.Y. – Roberta Peters, the coloratura soprano who was known to opera fans as “The American Nightingale,” died Wednesday, Jan. 18, in her home in Rye after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was 86.
Peters was a 35-year veteran of the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York, said to be the longest such association between any singer and an opera company.
A recipient of the National Medal of Arts, Peters chalked up more than 500 performances, according to her obituary in The New York Times.

Fay DeFrancisci, Former Yorktown Heights Resident, 95
YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Fay J. (Ciano) DeFrancisci, a former Yorktown resident, died in December in California. She was 95.
DeFrancisci lived in Castro Valley community and took part in programs at the Kenneth Aiken Senior Center.
DeFrancisci was born in the Bronx.
She married her husband, John, in 1950. They raised their children in Yorktown Heights.
The couple retired to California in 1993. John DeFrancisci died in 1996.
