Kids, PJs, Books: Ward School's Read-a-thon Draws Authors, Raises Funds
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Normally, parents and educators might despair of ever being able to tear kids away from their electronic “devices” long enough to read a real book, but that’s not a problem at the William B. Ward Elementary School in New Rochelle.
All month long, the students there have been eagerly participating in a read-a-thon, the school’s annual fundraiser, says its organizer, parent Melissa Panszi-Riebe.
The goal – besides raising money for the school – is to have the children read independently, or to others, a total of 2 million minutes.

Danbury Man Faces Robbery, Assault Charges
DANBURY, Conn. -- A Danbury man is facing charges of robbery and larceny in connection with an incident on Mill Ridge Road, according to a report by wlad.com.
Police told wlad.com that Tyrice Mouning, 23, has been accused of strong-arming $100 from an unidentified acquaintance at a shopping center there on Friday, Oct. 21, the wlad.com report said.
Mouning tried to run after being spotted by police at the shopping plaza the following day, but was chased down, arrested and is now being held on bond, wlad.com reported.

Decorated Soldier From Rockland Dies In Colorado
NEW CITY, N.Y. -- Rockland is in mourning after the death of a decorated soldier and former firefighter from Wesley Hills, said County Executive Ed Day.
Army Sgt. James Morrison was on active duty in Company C, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry in Ft. Carson, Colorado, when he was found dead Wednesday.
His death is under investigation, but foul play does not appear to be suspected.
The 28-year-old had been deployed to Afghanistan three times.

RAMAPO, N.Y. – The would-be buyer of a long-term care hospital in Pomona is suing Rockland County Executive Ed Day, claiming that he sullied his reputation, according to a report by lohud.com.
Shalom Braunstein, of Monsey, chief executive officer, of Sympaticare Health, pulled out of the $32 million deal to purchase the county-owned Summit Park Hospital and Nursing Care Center in fall 2015, but blamed Rockland for the deal's collapse, claiming that the county had breached its contract, previous lohud.com reports have said.
