'Zombie' Homes On The Decline In Rockland, Lawmakers Say
CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- The number of so-called “zombie” homes is on the decline in Rockland even though the law requiring mortgage holders to maintain abandoned properties doesn’t go into effect for four months, according to two state lawmakers.
State Sens. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx/Westchester, who sponsored the legislation, and David Carlucci, D-Rockland/Westchester, who supported it, announced this week that there are now approximately 207 such properties, as opposed to 272 found last May.

Head-On Crash In Yonkers Kills One, Injures Another, Police Say
YONKERS, N.Y. -- One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a car crash in Yonkers Thursday night, police said.
Police would not identify the deceased victim because they are trying to notify his next of kin. However, they did say he was an adult male resident of the city.
The cause of the crash, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Palmer Road near the intersection of Sunnybrook Road, is under investigation, and no arrests had been made, police said.
The road had to be closed for several hours while the accident scene was cleared, police said.

Michael E. Griest, Longtime Peekskill Teacher, Lincoln Portrayer, 77
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Michael E. Griest, an unforgettable Social Studies teacher famed for his portrayals of Uncle Sam and Abe Lincoln, died Tuesday at his Peekskill home. He was 77.
A native of Charlotte, Mich., he was a member of the Peekskill Presbyterian Church.
Griest was a chaplain at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center and also served with the Cortlandt Hook & Ladder Co. 1 for 45 years.
Besides teaching for 32 years at Peekskill High School, he enjoyed playing the role of Uncle Sam during the city’s Fourth of July parades and bore an uncanny resemblance to Lincoln, whom he portrayed …
