Andrew Cuomo announced Friday. The town is getting a $3 million grant and a $4.1 million loan toward a $7.1 million drinking water project. 'Zombie' Homes On The Decline In Rockland, Lawmakers Say CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- The number of so-called “zombie” homes is on the decline in Rockland even though the law requiring mortgage holders to maintain abandoned properties doesn’t go into effect for four months, according to two state lawmakers. State Sens. Griest, an unforgettable Social Studies teacher famed for his portrayals of Uncle Sam and Abe Lincoln, died Tuesday at his Peekskill home. He was 77. A native of Charlotte, Mich., he was a member of the Peekskill Presbyterian Church. Griest was a chaplain at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center and also served with the Cortlandt Hook & Ladder Co. 1 for 45 years. The mortally wounded victim, identified by police as Elias Flores, was left by an unknown person at St. Joseph’s Medical Center's emergency room and died shortly afterwards.
