Former Yorktown Lacrosse Player Honored For Black History Month
YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Yorktown High School grad Ousmane Power-Greene, an athlete, college professor, and author, was named by North Carolina Athletics as its honoree for Black History Month.
Power-Green, a member of the Class of 1991, played lacrosse, basketball, and football while growing up in Yorktown.
Yorktown’s lacrosse program has produced 39 section championships, seven state championships, and numerous college athletes.

Gary Keeler, Pine Plains Superintendent Of Water, 66
PINE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Pine Plains’ Gary Keeler, who headed the town’s water department, died Sunday at home. He was 66.
Keeler, a native of Rhinebeck, previously worked at DeLaval, a leading producer of dairy and farming equipment, in Poughkeepsie.
He also worked for IBM until he purchased his own business, CT Glass in Red Hook. After selling CT Glass, he became the village of Rhinebeck’s building inspector and also drove a bus for the Pine Plains Central School District.

Nira G. Gerken, 83, Of Beacon
Nira G. Gerken, a Beacon resident and Newburgh native, died Friday, March 3, at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. She was 83.
Gerken was born in 1933 to the late Earl and Gertrude (McDowell) Davis.
She was the widow of Richard H. Gerken, who died in 2008.
Gerken, who had worked as a chef with Hanger One in Newburgh, was an inductee in the Newburgh Bowling Hall of Fame and also belonged to the L.P.B.A.
She also was an avid bingo player.

Lulu Roberta Lawrence, 77, Of Poughkeepsie
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- Lulu Roberta Lawrence, a lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, died Saturday, Feb. 25. She was 77.
Lawrence was born in 1939 at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie to the late Chester G. and Indiana M. Penfield. She was the seventh of 12 children.
Lawrence attended Poughkeepsie High School. Her favorite sport was track and field.
She worked at the Mid-Hudson Workshop, Inc. in Poughkeepsie for 35 years.
Lawrence was also a Jehovah’s Witness for 46 years.

Man Stole $40K In Stocks From Millbrook Resident, Police Say
A Dutchess County man has accused his accountant of stealing thousands of dollars, according to state police.
The unidentified Millbrook resident told authorities last October that Max N. Sandmeier had traded $40,000 in his stocks and had benefited financially from the sale, state police said.
Sandmeier, 49, of Walden in Orange County, was arrested on Friday, March 3, and charged with third-degree grand larceny, first-degree identify theft, and first-degree falsifying business records, all felonies.
