Philip S. Wolfe, Mathematician, of Ossining, 89
OSSINING, N.Y. – Philip Starr “Phil” Wolfe, an Ossining resident and groundbreaking mathematician, died Thursday, Dec. 29, after a brief illness. He was 89.
The California native earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of California at Berkeley and went on to become one of the founding fathers of the field of optimization, the mathematics that underlies modern operations research.
In the mid-1950s, Wolfe taught at Princeton. He later joined RAND Corporation, a nonprofit institution that helps improve policy and decision-making through research and analysis.

Nationally Known Local Musicians Launch 'Community Sing' In Peekskill
PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Songs of “perserverance and protest” will be bursting forth from many lips at a free “Community Sing” at a Peekskill café this week.
Leading the singers at the Beanrunner Café will be Lisa Gutkin, a violinist and vocalist for the Grammy-winning klezmer band, The Klezmatics, and well-known local musician Fred Gillen Jr.
Gutkin and Gillen, both compatriots of the late folksinger, environmental champion and activist Pete Seeger, just started performing as a duo this fall.

Man Stopped For Traffic Violations In Nyack Was Drunk, Police Say
ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A West Haverstraw man is facing charges of driving while intoxicated after he was pulled over early New Year’s Day by Orangetown police.
Stefan Martinez, 27, was stopped on Main Street in the village of Nyack around 4:25 a.m., police said.
The officer who pulled him over reported that Martinez’s breath smelled of alcohol, that his speech was slurred and his eyes were glassy.
He was given, and failed, a field sobriety test and taken to police headquarters where he submitted to a breathalyzer test, which he also failed, police said.

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- A New Rochelle-based volunteer organization that builds housing for folks in need has set several events for January, says its CEO Jim Killoran.
Habitat for Humanity of Westchester will be celebrating the Christian feast day, Three Kings Day (Dios de Los 3 Reyes), aka Epiphany, with a community breakfast from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Jan. 7, at its headquarters, 659 Main St.

Jacqueline Doris Allen, 80, of Fishkill
FISHKILL, N.Y. – Jacqueline Doris Allen of Fishkill died on Friday, Dec. 30, in Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. She was 80.
She was born in Rochester to the late June Wolfe Allen.
Allen later moved to Syracuse, where she lived until she moved to Dutchess County in 2004.
Allen worked as a vault teller for Marine Midland Bank / H.S.B.C. in Syracuse for 17 years before retiring in 1999.
A member of Fishkill Senior Citizens, she enjoyed playing Bingo and online poker.

Retired Warehouse Manager James Biele, 78, Of Pawling
PAWLING, N.Y. -- James Biele of Pawling died Monday, Dec. 26. He was 78.
Biele, a retired manager for Toy & Sports Warehouse in New Rochelle, was born in Baltimore to Frank and Anne (Martin) Biele.
His wife, Edith (Gavula), died in 2008.
Biele is survived by his son, Kenneth (Ann); four daughters, Brigitta Braatz, Katherine (Terry) Jones, Loretta (Michael) Montemarano, Kelly (Paul) Wood, and Kim Biele; his sister, Carol; many grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
