Bedford Playhouse Nears Fundraising Goal To Begin Construction BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The folks trying to turn the Bedford Playhouse, one of northern Westchester’s oldest cultural institutions, into a nonprofit arts cinema and community center, are marking a fundraising milestone. Thanks to several recent large donations, the campaign has now raised $4.6 million of its $5.2 million needed to begin construction. Additional fundraising will ensure the Playhouse is operational in 2017. In the past six weeks alone, the effort has raked in $800,000. About $600,000 more is needed to begin construction. Hen Hud Senior Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist CORTLANDT, N.Y. -- A student from the Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. Senior Wendy Yu is among 16,000 semifinalists who have been selected based on outstanding 2015 PSAT scores. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The academically talented students now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,500 scholarships worth at total of $33 million. The awards will be presented next spring. Medical Issue Forces Singer Daryl Hall To Cancel Pawling Concert PAWLING, N.Y. – Tonsil woes have forced rocker Daryl Hall to forgo performing on New Year’s Eve at his Pawling food and music venue, Daryl’s House, according to a report by the Poughkeepsie Journal. The former Dutchess County resident was going to sing with his band on his monthly free webcast, “Live from Daryl’s House,” but was advised by doctors to save his voice while he is dealing with the medical issue, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported. Hearings Set On Tappan Zee Bus Loop ORANGETOWN, N.Y. -- The state Department of Transportation has set a second round of “open house” events for a project intended to improve travel along I-287. The first phase of the Lower Hudson Transit Link involves the highway corridor between Suffern to the west and White Plains to the east. It also includes infrastructure and service enhancements along Route 59 in Rockland County and Route 119 in Westchester County, the state DOT said. East Ramapo Residents To Decide Fate Of $58 Million Bond For Schools EAST RAMAPO, N.Y. – The East Ramapo school district wants to spend close to $60 million fixing up or replacing roofs, windows, floors and other crucial infrastructure, according to a report by lohud.com.
