Norwalk Volunteers Take Action To Clean Up Five Mile River Watershed NORWALK, Conn. -- Dozens of volunteers collected more than two pickup trucks' worth of trash from around a pond in Norwalk on Saturday. More than 25 students, staff and faculty members at Norwalk Community College, teamed up with other volunteers to remove debris on the school’s West Campus. The pond is part of the Five Mile River watershed, a 7,994-acre drainage basin that starts at a reservoir in New Canaan and winds its way south through Darien and Norwalk before emptying into Long Island Sound at Sheffield Island Harbor. Mount Vernon Adult Home Seeks Protection From Creditors MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- The Chester Hill Adult Home in Mount Vernon is seeking protection from the city, and other creditors, while it tries to straighten out its faltering finances, according to a report by lohud.com. The Cottage Avenue facility, which houses about 20 residents, owes more than $200,000 in back taxes and has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, lohud.com reported. This latest development just adds to the home’s woes. In 2015, its residents had to be evacuated after a carelessly tossed cigarette caused a fire, the lohud.com article said. Police: Amenia Teen Stopped For Speeding Had Psychedelic Mushrooms, Dagger DOVER, N.Y. -- A 19-year-old Amenia resident had psychedelic mushrooms and a dagger on him when he was stopped for speeding in Dover last Thursday, state police said. Michael J. Azzarito, who had been pulled over by state troopers on Old Route 22, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony; and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, police said. He was arraigned in Town of Dover Justice Court and sent to Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond, police said.

New Castle Coyote Attacks Spur Alerts, Calls For Caution CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- New coyote attacks on pets in New Castle have both police and a wildlife expert calling for change – not by the wild canines, but by people. According to police, a 38-pound dog on Hardscrabble Road and a 44-pound pooch on Ludlow Drive were attacked last week. In both cases, their owners heard the dogs barking and were able to frighten the coyotes off. Both pets survived. But earlier this year, two smaller dogs were attacked by coyotes in the Random Farms section of the town. One of those dogs died.
