West Nyack, Blauvelt Residents Help Snapping Turtles Stay Safe On Roads How do the snapping turtles cross the road in Blauvelt and West Nyack? Relatively safely, with the help of fans of the scary looking reptiles. Zach Whitman, a veterinarian in Putnam County’s Carmel, has been working with a group in Rockland that has been trying to keep the critters from being run over by cars on busy Western Highway. According to Whitman, every spring dozens of female snappers emerge from a wetlands located between the highway and Sickletown Road in Blauvelt and West Nyack and head for prime egg-laying territory on the other side. Putnam Loses Bid To Withhold Gun-Owner Data This story has been updated. CARMEL, N.Y. – Putnam County has lost a bid to keep secret the names of gun owners who didn’t opt out of a public database, according to a report by lohud.com. A state judge ruled two years ago that names and addresses had to be disclosed, but the county took its case to the state’s Appellate Division, lohud.com reported. That four-judge panel unanimously ruled that The Journal News/lohud is entitled to those names, and the only recourse the county now has is to get the state Court of Appeals’ OK to challenge it, the lohud.com story said. Journal News executiv…

Video Introduces New Clarkstown Teachers, Other Hires CLARKSTOWN, N.Y. -- Remember the olden days when the teacher used to introduce herself to students by using an annoyingly squeaky piece of chalk to write her name on the blackboard? (I can picture the pained expressions on the kids’ faces now.) The Clarkstown Central School District has managed to put a new twist on the classroom ritual with a video of its latest hires. Each new educator states his or her name, the subject he or she will teach, and the school or schools where he or she has been assigned. Among the 25 new hires are teachers, classroom aides, a school counselor and a school…

Based on the Giuseppe Verdi opera of the same name, "Aida" has music by Elton John and lyrics by Tim Rice. Having been in the program since she was a freshman, Denizard says she knew shows like that may be magical, but &quo…

New York Magazine Spotlights Greeley Sex Abuse Case CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. – Was Christopher Schraufnagel just a “big kid,” as one former student called him, whose artistic ambitions led him to push boundaries on the stage and off, or was the former Horace Greeley High School drama teacher something more sinister? That’s the tangled web New York magazine attempts to unravel in a newly published story on “The Cut,” a website that touts itself as a source for news about fashion, beauty, politics and sex. Schraufnagel, who was openly gay and liked to come to school wearing flannel shirts and sneakers, was the artsy crowd’s favorite teacher at Greeley …
